Just ran across an interesting article detailing some statistics from the National Association of Realtors about home inspections. I was happy to see that 77% of home buyers have a home inspection before completing the purchase of a home, which is a good sign since this reduces the risks for the home buyer and the realtor. The survey also showed that 99% of realtors recommend home inspections to their clients, which is a great way for realtors to reduce their liability during the sale of a home. While only 16% of realtors have lost a sale due to a home inspection, which surprised me a little that it was so low. There are of course other reasons a sale doesn’t go through such as financing, incorrect information, change in family situation, or other reasons not related to the actual home inspection. I hear many stories from inspectors and realtors about the adversarial role they play in the real estate business but from this I see it works out in most cases. Also, I believe that home buyers and sellers should expect to be given the best information possible to make an informed decision, the same way home inspectors or realtors would have it for themselves or their families.
