Avoiding Conflicts of Interest with Home Inspectors

I am reminded by a recent article out of Winnipeg, Canada of how important it is to avoid conflicts of interest between your business and the other people you work with.  This code inspector in Canada, who is mislabeled as a home inspector, is charged with illegally approving building plans from his wife’s business without the proper engineering stamps to make sure the building was structurally sound.  This relates to home inspectors because there are many possible conflicts of interest out there for us including: a family member is a realtor and you are inspecting properties for them or someone else in their office, most of your referrals are from realtors and there is a fear you won’t get more business if you scare the buyers away from too many properties, giving or receiving gifts to realtors to gain business, and the list goes on.  It is important to hire a home inspector who is licensed, follows a code of ethics and seeks their clients independently of potential conflicts of interest.  Check out the original story from CBC News Manitoba by following this link.
